Critics Consensus

Providing Alan Ritchson an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma, War Machine occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth but otherwise soldiers on to deliver an awesome dose of action spectacle.

It's a science-fiction survival film – the Ranger candidates are carrying blanks – with trace elements of Transformers, Battleship, and Spielberg's War of the Worlds. Somewhat derivative, but modestly enjoyable. Go to Full Review
Frank Scheck The Hollywood Reporter Mar 9
The film’s R rating is well-deserved thanks to the profusion of burnt and dismembered bodies on view in the alien machine’s wake. Unfortunately, the screenplay by Hughes and co-writer James Beaufort leaves much to be desired. Go to Full Review

It makes for a slicker-than-usual streaming premiere, an easy, drink-your-way-through-it Friday night option for those who wish to remain entirely unchallenged. Go to Full Review

War Machine is one of the most agonizingly boring films in recent memories, reveling in its garden-variety elements while failing to take advantage of what little novelty it does possess. Go to Full Review

That said, the film also delights in showing blood, bones and guts, so be warned if you're not in the mood for a glut of flying viscera. Go to Full Review

Sean P. @whatever8 6h Terrible - I regretted watching See more Scott H @RT41913252 11h Gets a little too action-busy for its own good, there are some weak characters and some plausibility issues. That said, good enough to watch. See more Tjerk V @RT70816005 1d I think I would have loved this if they just would have toned it down a bit. They have pumped this so full with action that there is no suspense or development of characters (except the lead). Also the constant screaming of the soldiers gets annoying. Don't know about the ending of the movie, I lost interest after about an hour. See more Jordan S. @jswez 1d War Machine is at the crossroads of fantasy sci-fi meets realistic military and it doesn’t disappoint. What it lacks in dialogue and character development it makes up for with a unique foreign adversary and sheer action badassery. See more Philip P @Nibbs 2d War machine started out with quite a bit of potential but it quickly became apparent that there were more holes in it than a block of swiss cheese. I couldn't help thinking that there were too many short cuts to get around issues. Alan Richardson is obviously comfortable in this Jack Reacher type role and it suits him but I feel he should start diversifying if he doesn't want to become type cast. All in all War Machine wasn't that bad but you have to suspend a lot of belief to enjoy it fully. See more nilufer E @Nilicim 2d War Machine didn’t really add much for me, but it delivers some solid ‘manly men’ energy and a bit of action. Not memorable, but easy enough to sit through.
